Speech and Drama

For whom the meaning of speech is revealed
The world unfolds itself in pictures
The one who hears the soul of speech
Will see the world as Being
He who lives the spirit of speech
Is given strength and wisdom by the universe.

~Rudolf Steiner

Small Group Learning

In small groups, students take part in weekly lessons that combine speech and drama.

Sounds of Speech

Students embark on a journey to discover the sounds of speech, their qualities of movement, and the joy of words and poetry.

Movement of Drama

Students learn gestures, play games, use props, build improvisational skills, and, on occasion, perform for an audience.

“Working in equality as a team to create and express our human nature through drama and speech.”

Speech and Drama in Steiner Education

Children learn that sounds are much more than what we utter with our mouth: they are as colours that form and merge on the canvas of our speaking. Experiencing artistic speech gives children a wider palate for communication, the confidence of expression, and the ability to develop the much needed skill of ensemble — working in equality as a team to create and express our human nature through drama and speech.

Drama opens the door to our ability to create out of ourselves, using our own self as instrument: body, gesture, movement, and voice. Through drama we walk in the shoes of another in character work; children begin to 'know' the world in a holistic way (rather than through intellectual concepts about people and things), through playing the part. Drama and theatre give us an understanding which can grow into empathy for the varied and diverse nature of human beings.
